Our Participants
During the 2023-2024 school year, Concrete Queenz had 25 girls in the program at Animo Mae Jemison Charter Middle School (AMJ) in Compton.
AMJ serves grades 6-8th: 51% female students and 49% male students, with 99% minority student enrollment. 95% of students are economically disadvantaged. 22% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 37% scored at or above that level for reading. There are also no physical education classes for students and no other girls sports programs besides Concrete Queenz.
Next year we are hoping to expand to another school site, Animo Legacy, to serve another 25 girls. The student population of Animo Legacy Charter Middle is 954 and the school serves 6-8th. At Animo Legacy Charter Middle, 20% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 29% scored at or above that level for reading. The school’s minority student enrollment is 99%. The student population is made up of 49% female students and 51% male students and the school enrolls 92% economically disadvantaged students.
